Visit the mill

Come browse our beautiful yarns (and other woolly goodies) in our cosy mill shop, and if you’re fascinated to see how we make the yarn, book a mill tour.

We are a scenic 1-hour drive from Reykjavik, and part of the Woollen Circle.

Include a visit to Uppspuni as part of a woolly day-trip from Reykjavik, or a woolly side-quest as you tour the Golden Circle.

Browse the store

Everything in our shop is made from 100% Icelandic sheep wool, most of it from our own sheep, a little from the sheep of our friends and neighbours. And then we have our precious goat yarn from the Icelandic goats!

In the store, you can of course, buy our yarn, including our sturdy sock yarn (no nylon!). We have mostly natural colours and a selection of dyed yarns, dyed here in the mill.

You can also buy authentic lopapeysa sweaters and beanies hand-knit by locals using Uppspuni yarn, knitting kits, Icelandic knitting pattern books and single patterns, tops and roving for spinners and felters, goat and sheep pelts, fishskin buttons, stitch markers, felted wool elves and sheep, sheep tallow soap (yes, also from our sheep and made by us)…there’s a lot!

Learn about the machines and mill

When you walk through the front door, you’ll see the mill room right in front of you – where all the magic happens!

And chances are, you’ll find us hard at work in the mill making yarn when you visit.

You are welcome to watch from the entrance way, or if you want to learn about the mill process and get a closer look at the machines, book a mill tour.

Get comfortable

Not everyone loves wool (yes, we also don’t understand this, but we accept that it’s true).

For those ‘tagging along’ on your visit to Uppspuni, we have a cosy lounge area where they can relax, browse our fascinating books (admittedly all about textiles), or spend some quality time on their phone 🙂

We are open Monday to Friday, 9:30 am to 3:00 pm.

We are closed on Saturday and Sunday.

Check our Facebook page for Christmas and other holiday opening hours.

We are a scenic 1-hour drive from Reykjavik and a 20-minute drive from Selfoss.

Just search Uppspuni Mini Mill in Google Maps, or click on the map directions below.

We are located at Lækjartún 2, just a little east of the bridge over the river Þjórsá, which you can stop at to enjoy the falls.

We are also surrounded by spectacular mountains for an amazing view on a clear day.

We offer mill tours on Mondays and Thursdays at 10:00 am (or by appointment).

Bookings are essential as tours fill up. You can book a tour by emailing us (hulda@uppspuni.is). We suggest booking ahead, as we host many tour groups and student groups at the mill and cannot always accommodate tours at short notice.

There are two tour options:

  • 20-minute mill tour – 1,600 kronor per person (children under 14 yrs old are free) – this includes a guided tour of the mill floor, describing the process of transforming fleece into yarn.
  • 40-minute mill tour and fibre talk – 2,600 kronor per person (children under 14 yrs old are free) – this includes the mill tour as above and an informative talk about Icelandic fibres and milling history by mill founder, Hulda Brynjólfsdóttir, in the cosy shop lounge.

You can pay for tours and shop items with either Icelandic Kronor, or via all major credit cards.

We participate in the Icelandic VAT tax refund scheme. If your store purchases (not including tours) total more than 12,000 IKR, we can provide you with the receipts to claim back the tax component at the airport when you leave Iceland.

Yes, you are welcome to take photographs in the mill and the shop. Please don’t take photos of our staff without their permission though.

We love to see your photos online too, so please tag us if you share them on Instagram or Facebook.
